Ashot Navasardyan would be 59
Ashot Navasardyan was born on March 28, 1950. Since 1968 he had been a member to the National Unity Party engaging in national liberation struggles. He had served on the National Unity Party's board since 1973, according to Armenian Republican Party.
Inspired by and following Garegin Nzhdeh ideas, Ashot Navasardyan had been a critic of the totalitarian government of the Soviet Union. The ultimate goal that spearheaded all of Ashot Nvasardyan's thoughts and deeds consisted in a free, independent and unified Armenia. The struggle initiated by him and his friends as early as in the 60s of the last century was not at all finished by the reinstatement of independence.
For these ideas and activities A. Navasardyan was three times sentenced to imprisonment for overall 12 years. In 1987, after being released, he, anyway, didn’t give up his struggle for freedom and independence.
In 1989 he founded «Independence Army» military-political organization, which had its part in the fights for the defense of Armenian borders and Artsakh liberation.
He was awarded the 1st degree Order of the Fighting Cross.
In 1990 Ashot Navasardyan was elected a deputy of the Supreme Council of Armenia. He was a member to the Board of the Supreme Council Constitutional Commission.
Since 1995 he had been a National Assembly deputy and the deputy chairman of the Commission for defense, national security and internal affairs.
The prominent national, political figure Ashot Navasardyan suffered sudden death on November 3, 1997.
