Armenian president receives heads of leading news agencies
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan received today heads of leading new agencies of the Black Sea region and CIS countries. They arrived in Yerevan to discuss prospects of developing cooperation in the field of information, according to the presidential press service.
Yerevan now hosts the 19th meeting of the Council of Heads of CIS State News Agencies and the 7th session of the General Assembly of the Association of Black Sea National News Agencies.
Welcoming the participants, Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of such meetings in terms of developing cooperation in information sphere. He expressed hope that friendly relations of the leading news agencies in the Black Sea region and CIS countries with Armenpress news agency will deepen. He said that the development of information technology across the world results in an increase in information volumes and access to it, creating great opportunities on the one hand and challenges on the other.
Serzh Sargsyan also spoke about freedom of press, noting that Armenia believes that freedom of press and information availability are foundations of democracy and civil society and based on these principles, opportunities are created for adequate manifestation of the free press. In his words, there have been some positive changes in this sphere in Armenia, indicated by famous international organizations.
The president also answered questions of the heads of news agencies concerning regional developments, Armenian economy, integration processes, particularly Armenia’s entry into the Eurasian Economic Union, Armenia-EU cooperation development, etc.
