Istanbul hosts Armenian Genocide conference
An international conference devoted to the Armenian Genocide was held in Istanbul’s Bogazici University, bringing together scholars from different world countries, IMC TV reported.
Entitled “100th Years of Armenian Genocide: Wordings and Comparative Perspectives”, the event was an attempt to shed light on dark chapters of history.
In his speech, Professor Fatma Muge Gochek (Michigan University) dwelled on the historical turn of events that led up to the major tragedy 100 years ago.
Ayhan Aktar from Bilgi University (Istanbul) said the phrase “shared pain” has been in use since 1918 as a chosen wording to describe what happened to the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.
Professor Ugur Umit Ungor added that he wouldn’t like to live in Turkey as an ethnic minority representative.
Commenting on the continuing denial, Bulent Bilmez, an associate professor from Bilgi University, said he knows that the policy has been always pursued, with only discussions over it becoming increasingly active over the recent period.
