U.S. doesn’t look with favor on Turkey-Iran gas deal
U.S. doesn’t set its seal to Iranian-Turkish gas agreement. “It’s not time to enter into business ties” with Iran not only for U.S. but for “other states, too”, said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon commenting new gas deal between Turkey and Iran, in Washington. He pointed that U.S. has no economic and commercial ties with Iran and reminded about possible economic sanctions against countries which invest in Iran’s energy sector.
The gas agreement between Turkey and Iran on Iranian gas transit via Turkey to Europe was discussed and reached during the visit of Turkish delegation headed by Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iran, on November 2. Meanwhile, experts say these agreements may become basis for Nabucco project supporting it. Nabucco is a planned natural gas pipeline with total length of 3,3 thousand kilometers from Central Asia to EU countries. The design capacity is 26-32 bln cub m of gas per year. Nabucco project expected to transport gas from Central Asia to EU-countries bypassing Russia.
