The US Congress approves the Armenian Genocide resolution
Yesterday the US House of Foreign Affairs Committee with 23 votes for and 22 against affirmed the H.Res.252 concerning the Armenian Genocide Resolution.
Before the voting the Congressmen had hot discussions. They were proving their disposition of being for or against the Resolution.
It’s worth mentioning that all the speakers recognized the crime of the Ottoman Turkey realized against the Armenians in 1915 as Genocide. Those who voted against explained their decision by the wrong choice of the time or the place. They were concerned with the worsening of the Turkish – American strategic relations. There were also opinions that the approval of the resolution can negatively reflect over the Armenian – Turkish reconciliation processes.
However, the resolution is passed which proves that no geopolitical interest can make the humanity close its eyes over one of the bitterest pages of the Armenian nation’s history, the Armenian Genocide.
On the resolution were also present the ambassadors of Armenia and Turkey to the USA, as well as parliamentarian delegations from both countries.
In 1915 the Armenians living in Ottoman Turkey were submitted to the violations of that country. A million and half Armenians were killed only because they were Armenians. Over half million Armenians migrated, as a result of which number of Armenian communities in different countries of the world were formed.
The Armenian Genocide is recognized by many countries like Russia, France, Germany, Canada… The first country that officially recognized the Armenian Genocide was Uruguay.
