3 Guantanamo detainees transferred to Georgia
Three Guantanamo Bay prison detainees have been sent to Georgia and handed over to the Tbilisi government, the U.S. Justice Department announced Tuesday.
"We are grateful to the government of Georgia for joining their efforts to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay," said State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.
Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said three prisoners "had arrived in Georgia in the morning.”
After transfer of the prisoners, 183 detainees still stay at Guantanamo more than two months after President Barack Obama's self-imposed deadline to close the facility. Among them is Mohammmed Oul Slahi, whom a federal judge Monday ordered to release.
