Nicaragua to set diplomatic ties with South Ossetia, Abkhazia
Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos will pay a visit to South Ossetia and Abkhazia after a trip to Moscow on Tuesday, local officials said on Monday. The visit’s goal is to establish diplomatic ties this week with the disputed Caucasus regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia have been recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru. These states became de-facto independent since the early 1990s, but their separation from Georgia proper increased after 2008’s conflict between Russia and Georgia, which led Moscow to set up military bases in the two territories.
