Kyrgyzstan asks Latvia to arrest Bakiev’s son
Kyrgyzstan has asked the Baltic state of Latvia to detain the son of ousted Kyrgyz leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the Latvian prosecutor's office said on Monday, the World Bulletin informs.
Bakiyev was toppled in an uprising in the Central Asian state last month and has since fled to Belarus. Latvian media have reported that his son Maksim, 32, has been in the Baltic state.
Andrejs Vasks, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said Kyrgyzstan had issued a temporary detention request against Maksim Bakiyev, the source says.
Vasks said however he had no information on whether Maksim Bakiyev was in the country. He added that his office had asked the Kyrgyz side for clarification, describing its request as "unclear and contradictory", reports the World Bulletin.
The international police agency Interpol last week issued an arrest warrant for Maksim Bakiyev in connection with fraud charges. The Kyrgyz prosecutor general's office has also said a criminal case was launched against him on May 4, the source says.
