Georgia celebrates Day of the Georgian Diaspora for the 3rd time
Georgian capital of Tbilisi is celebrating Thursday the Day of Georgian Diaspora, marking the event for the third time. The event gathered together representatives of the Georgian Communities from Armenia, Great Britain, Russia, Iran, France, USA, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Belgium, Japan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Israel, Turkey, Canada, Austria and Sweden.
Media reported that the oldest representative of the Georgian Diaspora, 103-year-old Aleksander Bestavashvili, from Great Britain, is on a visit to Tbilisi. On May 26, marked as Georgia’s Independence Day, county’s President Mikheil Saakashvili awarded him with the Order of Sparkle. The awarding ceremony took place at the military parade in front of the Parliament.
The Day of the Diaspora has been marking since 2007, by initiative of Mikhail Saakashvili who ticked May 27 as a festive day for Georgians of Diaspora.
Among the festive events are scheduled meetings with political leaders of the country, exhibitions, concerts, presentations, etc.
