Stalin placed at D-Day Memorial in Bedford, causing protests
Activists have gathered in the English city of Bedford to protest placement of the bust of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin at the National D-Day Memorial. The controversial piece arrived just in time for Sunday’s 66th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy during World War II.
The National D-Day Memorial Foundation defended its decision, insisting the bust is not installed to honor Stalin. There have already been placed busts of Allied leaders such as presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill because of their mutual opposition to Hitler's Germany.
Protesters said the place is not for installation of a bust of a person who is believed to have had roughly executed thousands of people during the late 1930s.
