Death toll from ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan increases to 214
The death toll from savage ethnic violence in the south of Kyrgyzstan has increased to 214 people, said country’s Ministry of Health. Earlier officials said of 208 killed people.
More than 2,100 people applied for medical care, while “many of them are in serious condition,” the ministry spokesperson told media.
Meanwhile officials say the real number of victims is several times higher than it was reported. Many of the killed people were buried immediately in accordance with Muslim tradition and thus not included in official estimates.
Secretary of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan Alik Orosov said that number of victims may become equal to more than 2,500 people.
Hundreds of thousands of people were affected by ethnic clashes in Kyrgyzstan, where some 400,000 people have been displaced by inter-ethnic fighting.
