Train kills 12, injures 17 near Barcelona
At least 12 young people were killed and 17 other were injured when they were trying to cross the tracks at the railway line near Barcelona. The accident occurred on Wednesday, Spanish officials said.
It is reported that a group of young adults were heading to the beach to celebrate a summer festival. The group crossed the tracks above ground rather than using a designated tunnel underneath, said Jose Ramon Mora, head of the Civil Protection Department for Catalonia regional government. They were hit by a long-distance train passing through the station in the seaside town of Castelldefels.
The train was not supposed to stop at the station and moved through the station at a high rate of speed.
