US Congress approves Iran Sanctions Bill
US Congress has overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Iran.
On a vote of 99-0, the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act empowers the President to impose the sanctions on foreign firms exporting gasoline and other refined petroleum products to Iran. The legislation is expected to be sent to the President’s desk for approval.
“This is the strongest Iran sanctions legislation ever passed by the Congress,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is quotes as saying.
It was reported earlier that at a joint White House press conference, US and Russian Presidents had pointed at agreements in their governments' cooperation, which include a major new nuclear arms control agreement (START) and support for sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.
