Use of force and such incidents are unacceptable, says Lonsdale
“We regret the armed incident and consider the use of force and such kind of incidents to be unacceptable,” said British Ambassador to Armenia Charles Lonsdale referring to the June 18-19 incident occurred in the northern part of the Line of Contact between Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh, resulting in casualties.
British Ambassador said that “the both sides should avoid a conflict.”
“This incident once more shows the importance of the settlement to the conflict through negotiations in a bid to prevent such developments in future,” said Ambassador. “We hope that incidents of such kind won’t take place in future and we call for both sides to activate efforts to reach a final decision,” he added.
The final solution to the Karabakh is beyond Britain’s competence, pointed Ambassador Lonsdale. He added that “it’s necessary to come to an agreement with all sides of the conflict” in order to reach as he described it a long-term solution.
“The decision should be based on the three OSCE’s principles which are people’s right to self determination, territorial integrity, and non-use of force,” said British Ambassador. He said: “In what way these principles will be put into practice and what final decision will be made – is a mater of decision by sides involved in the conflict.”
