Kyrgyz new Constitution wins 96,5% support
Kyrgyzstan voted on a new constitution Sunday showing that with almost all votes counted, 90,7% of voters backed a new constitution paving the way for parliamentary elections in October.
Only 8% had voted against, according to preliminary data collected from 96,5% of the country's 2,319 polling stations, the Central Election Commission said on its website. Voter turnout was around 65%.
"Our country today is on the brink of great danger, but the results of this referendum will show that the country is united, and that the people are one," said country’s interim leader Roza Otunbayeva on Sunday. "It will stand strong on its own feet and move forward," she said.
The new Constitution is expected to lead to parliamentary elections in October. Voters were also asked to endorse Roza Otunbayeva as interim President until the end of next year. Since June 28 Mrs Otunbayeva is being announced as interim president of Kyrgyzstan.
The approval of the new Constitution raises hope for the end of the political instability in the country which resulted in deadly ethnic violence in the southern part of Kyrgyzstan.
