Georgia to mark Day of Russia's Occupation
The Georgian Parliament is set to consider a bill on bringing in force two memorable days: one day is to mark on February 25 the Day of Occupation of Georgia, and another is linked to the Mourning Day about Victims of Totalitarianism which is to be marked on August 23, some Russian media reported citing Georgian agencies.
The Georgian lawmakers will vote for the commemoration days’ bill on Wednesday’s session, which is gathering parliamentarians for an extraordinary plenary meeting.
It’s worth mentioning also that on July 7, Georgian media reported that since this academic year, students will learn history using new additional text-books entitled “200 years of Russian occupation,” Lenta.ru agency reported citing a Tbilisi-run paper Versia. According to reports, the text-books were written and delivered by initiative of Commission under President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, which was established on April for learning the history of relations between the two nations. Then there appeared an idea to create a book on occupation. The book was prepared by Georgian Foundation of Humanitarian and Public Studies, and is being introduced within the framework of reforms in sphere of education for the near five years.
In addition, the Museum of Occupation opened in Georgia in 2006, and is dedicated to the history of Georgia’s Soviet-era times.
