Kosovo to apply for UN membership in 2011
President Fatmir Sejdiu of Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, has suggested that Kosovo could apply for UN membership in 2011.
After talks with French State Secretary of European Affairs Pierre Lellouche in Pristina on Friday, July 23, Sejdiu said he expects more countries will recognise Kosovo by September, before the UN General Assembly opens its session. He said believes at least 30 additional countries will soon recognize Kosovo's independence, following the International Court of Justice's ruling that Kosovo's declaration of independence did not violate international law.
Country’s Foreign Minister Skender Hyseni said that will request 121 nations for an official recognition of Kosovo’s independence. He is leaving for the United Stated this week-end, scheduling nearly 60 meetings aimed at independence of Kosovo.
Parliament of Kosovo adopted Friday a Resolution reading that the International Court’s decision had opened new ways for Kosovo’s recognition as well as ways towards country’s integration into regional and euro-Atlantic structures. The Resolution rules out any possibility of discussions with Belgrade over Kosovo’s status, while Serbian authorities don’t consider the Kosovo status to be final and say will defeat Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
