Iceland’s EU membership negotiations launch on July 27
The EU Council determined July 27 as the launch of negotiations of Iceland’s membership to EU. The EU Foreign Ministers also established the protocol, RIA Novosti reported.
On July 7, the EU Parliament had approved the European Commission proposal to launch negotiations with Iceland. The proposal was approved by the governments of European Union 27 member states in June.
The negotiations are expected to last from 12 to 18 months, and the negotiation dossier includes more than 35 articles.
Note that Iceland has a population of over 320 thousand people. The country has appeared on the verge of bankruptcy due to the financial crisis.
