Key players don’t wish for war in Karabakh, says expert
“The negotiations appear to have come to a stop and will probably remain deadlocked in the viewable future as there are too many complicated “variables” that are putting a crimp into the process of settlement to the conflict,” told 1News.az agency an expert at STRATFOR analytical company Evgeny Chausovsky referring to the current stage of the Karabakh talks.
According to the expert, neither Armenian, nor Azerbaijani sides wish for resumption of hostilities in the region, while the superpowers are interested in preservation of the status quo.
“None of the parties, whether it is Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia or the Western states – wishes that the Karabakh conflict turned into a military conflict, and that is why the key players feel themselves more comfortable, leaving the conflict be frozen,” he said.
When asked how justified are the parallels between Kosovo and the Karabakh conflict, Chausovsky said that the International Court ruled the issue in a narrow sense, addressing the decision on Kosovo’s independence only to the issue of the one-sided declaration of independence by Kosovars.
“Nevertheless, surely, it’s necessary to take into account, that others can follow Kosovo’s way, at least in declaration of own independence. The International Court and the West argue that Kosovo is a special issue and case, but this is not an argument that can satisfy most states, including the western nations,” said Chausovsky.
