Australia holds parliamentary elections
Australia is holding parliamentary elections today. The odds-on favourites are the current Prime Minister Julia Gillard of the Labour Party, and the leader of the federal opposition Tony Abbott of the Liberal Party, vesti.ru reported.
Analysts describe the elections as the most unpredictable in recent years. The gap between the two candidates is minimal.
Australia enforced a compulsory voting system 85 years ago following the voters’ disastrous absence from polling stations in the federal election of 1922.
