Turkey adopts constitutional amendment
Turkey held a referendum on constitutional amendment Sunday, with 58 percent of the voters approving the amendments.
26 constitutional amendments were put to vote. The amendments reduce influence of the military on Turkey’s political life, deprive organizers of the coup of 1980 of immunity and reduce the powers of military courts.
It is noteworthy that the referendum took place just 30 years after the coup of 1980, on September 12.
According to Radio Mayak, responding to the results of the referendum held in Turkey the European Union declared that it is a “step towards Turkey’s membership to the European Union.”
