U.S. stands for Turkey’s accession to E.U., says Crowley
State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley said at a press briefing on Monday that the referendum on changes to Turkey’s Constitution will contribute to the process of Turkey’s accession to the European Union.
"We respect that statement by the Turkish people. And we hope that the government will use this mandate to deepen democratic processes in Turkey as well as guarantee human rights protections," Phillip Crowley said. The United States on Monday has called on Ankara to follow up a decisive victory in a referendum on constitutional reform.
The referendum’s result is “a very strong, decisive vote to move toward greater civilian oversight of these democratic institutions, said Phillip Crowley describing the Sunday’s referendum in Turkey where some 58 percent of Turkish voters approved the controversial constitutional changes to reshape the judiciary and curb the military's powers of the country.
According to Euronews, Crowley said that the U.S. stands for Turkey’s joining the EU. “We see the favorable reaction of the Europe to these developments,” he is quoted as saying.
