Abkhazia’s Vice President wounded in mortar attack
Vice President of Georgian break-away Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab suffered wounds in his leg and arm, when his home in Gudauta region of the country was attacked early on Thursday morning, Abkhazian First Deputy Interior Minister Ramin Gablaya told RIA Novosti agency.
This attack is the fourth killing attempt in a row. Two attempts were committed in 2005 and one another in 2007 resulting in a slight concussion and a fragmentation wound when Alexander Ankvab’s car appeared under a grenade launcher attack.
Abkhazia’s President Sergei Bagapsh said the attack was a bid to destabilize the region. He told Interfax agency: “I am just sure that the attack is an attempt to destabilize the region. The investigation is underway and I believe we’ll found out who stands behind this.”
Alexander Ankvab’s life is not in danger, according to country’s officials.
