Opinion: Karabakh conflict is deadlocked
“I don’t think that the Karabakh conflict will be solved through military meanings,” said in his interview with 1News.az information agency PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Studies of Bordeaux, Samuel Lussac.
Samuel Lussac said that despite great expectations on mediation of Kazakhstan and the upcoming December summit of the OSCE in Astana, the process of settlement to the Karabakh conflict is deadlocked. Expert said that the focus of Russia and the United States is on the issues like the Iranian nuclear crisis, the situation in North Korean and so on, not on the Karabakh conflict. In his opinion, the EU could play more active role in settlement to the conflict.
Referring to the possibility of military conclusion of the conflict, Lussac said: “From the economical point of view, a new conflict between the two countries isn’t a solution. This would cause terrible consequences for the two nations. Neither Armenia, nor Azerbaijan is interested in this.”
Expert stressed that no one will invest in countries in state of the war which can seriously damage Armenian and Azerbaijani economics.
“I don’s think that Armenia or Azerbaijan can solve the conflict through force. Despite the clear differences in military budgets, it would be very difficult to win such a war. It’s a mountainous region, armies are well trained, and possibly, the war will last for a very long time. Look at the beginning of 1990s and remember economical consequences of the war for both Armenia and Azerbaijan: I don’t think that Baku and Yerevan want to experience this once again,” he added.
