Italy to debate burqa ban
Italian ruling the People of Freedom Party (PdL) has introduced a bill in the Upper House of country’s Parliament seeking ban on wearing burqa in public.
“Who decides to live in another country must accept the rules of that place,” the Sicilian member of (PdL) Simona Vicari said.
According to the legislation, wearing burqa will be punishable by up to 2 years in prison, fines from 150 to 2,000 euros for the wearer and 30,000 euros for anyone forcing a woman to don the face-covering Islamic garment.
The same steps were taken in France, where on September 14 the Parliament passed a law prohibiting wearing a full-face veil in public, meaning a ban will come into force early next year if it is not overturned by senior judges.
