FIDE to elect chief in Khanty-Mansiysk voting
World chess body FIDE is electing its chief in Russian Urals city of Khanty-Mansiysk where the FIDE Congress is taking place. Since yesterday, the secretariat has been accepting letters of attorney from those countries whose representatives couldn’t travel to Russia to vote.
The voting will last several hours and the results will be ready nearly after noon local time. It will be approximately 11 am – 113 pm Moscow time when the winner will be known.
FIDE congressmen will also vote for presidents of continental chess federations of Africa, America, Asia and the Europe.
Current FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is standing for re-election but faces a strong challenge from Soviet chess legend Anatoly Karpov.
