U.S. supports status quo in Karabakh, says American analyst
“During Bush’ presidency, relations between the United States and Azerbaijan were higher,” said in his interview with APA agency Thomas Ambrosia, a South Caucasus specialist, lecturer at the North Dakota State University.
When asked about future relations between Washington and Baku after US President Barack Obama’s meeting with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, the expert noted that the meetings of such kind are usual.
“The White House now is a little bit distanced from the alliance with Azerbaijan established during presidency of Bush,” said Thomas Ambrosia.
Referring to Barack Obama’s remarks that White House will keep focus on the Karabakh conflict, the expert said that the statement of such kind makes one think that it is a matter of priority. However, Ambrosia pointed that there isn’t any active diplomatic effort by US administration in relation to the issue.
“The White House supports the Minsk Group, but actually this is a backing of the status quo. I think, meetings of the Minsk Group which has been acting for more than 15 years will continue,” said the expert.
