S. Safaryan: NKR recognition may sober Azerbaijan

The international community will not recognize Nagorno Karabakh’s independence until Armenia does it, Head of the Heritage parliamentary faction Styopa Safaryan declared at a discussion on recognition of NKR independence by Armenia.

According to the parliamentarian, NKR recognition may simultaneously resolve several problems. Stepanakert will become a party in the negotiations, and not the final status but other important issues will be already discussed.

“There are no negotiations presently, these are merely meetings. Negotiations should be tripartite, with NKR’s participation,” Safaryan stated.

Safaryan does not support the viewpoint that recognition of Nagorno Karabakh independence by Armenia is untimely.

He admits that recognition may contain some risks, meanwhile believes that recognition may sober Azerbaijan.

“No one says that recognition cannot be unilateral, especially as this process is well regulated.”
