“Nagorno Karabakh still awaits international recognition”

“Every case of self-determination is unique, and all cases should not be considered as similar, however, legal resolutions should be based on common principles. Kosovo precedent was important for Armenian party since the UN International Court established that proclamation of unilateral sovereignty does not contradict to the international law,” President Serzh Sargsyan stated at a joint press conference with Slovenian President Danilo Türk.

S. Sargsyan said that over a short period in its long history, for several dozen years, Nagorno Karabakh was forced to be under Azerbaijani jurisdiction.

“Karabakh people never accepted the situation, even in the period of Stalin’s repressions. Taking the very first opportunity NKR people proclaimed unilateral independence by holding a referendum in accordance with the norms of international law. Azerbaijan forced a war upon Nagorno Karabakh, however, Nagorno Karabakh people managed to defend itself, with the assistance of Armenia and Armenian people,” S. Sargsyan said stressing that Nagorno Karabakh Republic was established without foreign mediation, and it is the difference between the Nagorno Karabakh problem and Kosovo problem.

“Unlike Kosovo, Nagorno Karabakh still awaits international recognition,” President stressed.

“Nagorno Karabakh people managed to defend itself without NATO assistance, today NKR people can voice that they have never violated the international law and await until the international community accepts their right of unilateral sovereignty from Azerbaijan.”
