NATO summit launches
NATO summit kicks off today in the capital of Portugal. The summit will address NATO structural change and revision of its functions. Creation of NATO territorial missile defense systems is one of the most complicated and controversial issues to be discussed at the summit.
As part of the summit, U.S. President Barack Obama will have a series of bilateral meetings in Lisbon, including with President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai and President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili.
The White House reports that the meeting with Saakashvili will be closed-door.
Prior to the meeting, Obama will meet with Prime Minister of Portugal José Sócrates. Then the sides will make a statement for media.
