North, South Korea exchange artillery fire
South Korean officials say North Korea has fired dozens of artillery shells at a populated island near the two nations’ border in the Yellow Sea.
They say the South Korean military has returned fire.
South Korea’s YTN television says 60 to 70 houses have been set on fire and people have been injured on Yeonpyeong Island. A resident told YTN about 50 shells hit the island.
South Korean defense officials reached by news agencies confirmed the exchange of fire but could not confirm details of damage or injuries on the island.
