S. Sargsyan: Artsakh respected international law
President Serzh Sargsyan delivering a speech on the second day of OSCE summit addressed the factors that triggered the Nagorno Karabakh conflict reminding that Azerbaijan forgets that conflict consequences cannot be liquidated without liquidating the reasons.
Serzh Sargsyan said that after the collapse of the USSR two subjects enjoying equal rights were formed – Republic of Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh Republic. NK population made its choice through the independence referendum of 1991, respecting norms of international law and USSR laws.
According to the President, then non-recognized yet legitimate Nagorno Karabakh Republic underwent Azerbaijan’s aggression and facing the danger of extermination had to defend itself and managed to neutralize Azerbaijan’s plan of displacing Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh.
“The tripartite ceasefire agreement signed between Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan could launch the process of establishing peace in the region, however, Azerbaijan used the past 16 years to undertake a new military adventure under the guise of negotiations, against Minsk Group efforts,” Serzh Sargsyan said.
