US diplomat Richard Holbrooke dies three days after aortic tear
Richard Holbrooke, the architect of the 1995 Dayton Accords that brought peace to the Balkans and a man who performed diplomacy for presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama, passed away after a three-day fight to survive an aortic tear, as reported by BBC Russian.
Holbrooke was at the center of many international diplomatic efforts, from Vietnam in the 1960s to Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2009 and 2010. He was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s envoy to that troubled region in the Obama administration.
He previously served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. ambassador to Germany, and as assistant secretary of State, both for Europe and for Asia.
