Wikipedia received 500,000 donations
The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit that operates Wikipedia, has announced that it managed to raise its goal of US$16 million to keep the online encyclopedia free for users.
A total of 500,000 donations were received, more than doubling the number in Wikimedia’s previous campaign in 2009, the non-profit said in a statement.
The 50-day campaign—the shortest in Wikimedia history—received an average of US$22 per individual donation from people in about 140 countries, according to the organization.
The donations will be used to pay for technology costs, and “programs to encourage more people to participate and contribute as volunteers”, Wikimedia said.
