Ulubabyan: Sumgait pogroms part of Genocide
The Sumgait pogroms came to continue the Armenian Genocide committed by Turkey, Hrayr Ulubabyan, author of the book titled “Sumgait, Genocide, Publicity” told a news conference.
“Sumgait pogroms, like the massacres in Baku in 1905 and 1918, in Shushi in 1918, are part of the Armenian Genocide,” he noted.
Touching upon the events in Sumgait Ulubabyan noted that the pogroms were committed by Soviet Azerbaijan’s leadership with the consent of the USSR leadership. According to the speaker, it was not accidental that phone communication was cut off from February 27 to 29 in Sumgait, and the Soviet troops that entered the city never helped the Armenian population, keeping “neutrality.”
Ulubabyan described as “deliberate misinformation” the current attempts of Azerbaijani scholars and analysts to link the Sumgait events with the activities of the Western special services.
In Ulubabyan’s words, it is wrong to say that the Sumgait events started on February 27.
“Azerbaijan’s Communist Party presidium met on February 26 in Sumgait, chaired by Baghiyev. The pogrom plot was discussed at the meeting. Already on that day, a 6-year-old child was poisoned, and the meeting was followed by incidents throughout the city,” the speaker stressed.
