Sumgait, Baku massacres commemorated in U.S. Congress
The Armenian Embassy in Washington with the support of the co-chairs of the Congressional Armenian Caucus, NKR Representation in Washington, Armenian Assembly of America and ANCA held an event on February 28 to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Sumgait and Baku massacres, MFA press office said.
During the commemoration event, a documentary on the massacres of Armenians in 1988 in Sumgait and 1990 in Baku was screened.
The event was opened by Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone. In his speech, Pallone condemned the pogroms of Armenians in Sumgait and Baku naming them genocide and called on to keep supporting Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh in this issue.
NKR Foreign Minister Georgy Petrosyan stressed that condemnation of Sumgait tragedy would have prevented further pogroms in Baku, Kirovabad, Shahumyan, Maraga and other settlements. The Armenian people believes that the criminals will be punished and condemned by the humanity.
The event was concluded by a prayer by AAC Eastern Eparchy Primate and National Council of Churches USA Chairman, Archbishop Vigen Haykazyan.
