European Museum of Year named
Gallo-Roman Museum, located in the Belgian town of Tongeren, was named the European Museum of the Year. This was reported on the website of the European Museum Forum.
Gallo-Roman Museum in Tongerene appeared in 1954. However, site institution states that its history started in the middle of the XIX century. It was then the Royal Historical and Archaeological Society Tongeren beginning to excavate and collect items related to the history of the region.
In 2006 construction began on the new museum building. It lasted several years, which allowed the establishment to receive the award "European Museum of the Year."
