World food production can be reduced
Climate change over the next decade, in which severe drought in China and North America is expected, may have a negative impact on food production, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicts.
“Abrupt climate change will become more frequent in the future, especially in periods of intense heat and heavy rain,” said head of the WMO Baddur Omar in an interview with Bloomberg. “These factors, together with a decrease in rainfall in some regions, including the Mediterranean and China, will have an impact on agriculture and crops.”
The most dramatic changes in weather, including in the U.S., could reduce crop yields, livestock production, vegetable oils production and promote growth in food prices.
