Divorce does not help Sandra Torres in presidential run
The Supreme Court of Guatemala has disqualified former first lady Sandra Torres’ bid for presidency.
In March Torres divorced her husband, the current Guatemalan leader Alvaro Colom, to run for presidency in the September 2011 elections.
The Guatemalan Constitution bans relatives from running for presidency together. Then Mrs. Torres said she was divorcing Colom ‘for Guatemala’, however, the court considered the divorce as means to remove legal obstacles to her candidacy, the Voice of Russia reported.
Sandra Torres has said she would appeal the court decision.
The Guatemalan Constitution also bans Colom from running for a second term.
