Georgian parliament grants legal status to religious groups
Amendments to the Civil Code of Georgia envisaging granting legal status to religious groups passed third reading in the Georgian parliament. Meanwhile the amendments stipulate that granting the status must be coordinated with the Georgian Orthodox Church, newsgeorgia.ru reported.
The bill was supported by 70 MPs. Christian Democrats boycotted the vote claiming that the Georgian Orthodox Church’s view must be taken into consideration.
The amendments were submitted by the majority parties, which suggested grating legal status to religious groups historically linked to Georgia - the Roman Catholic Church, Armenian Apostolic Church, as well as Baptists, Evangelists, Moslems and Buddhists.
