Sentenced to a total of 377 years in jail
Two members of the Basque terrorist organisation ETA have been sentenced to a total of 377 years in jail between them, thinkspain.com reports.
Idoia Mendizábal and Asier Arzalluz (pictured) attempted to murder the mayoress of Portugalete (Vizcaya province, Basque Country) in 2002.
Although their target, Esther Cabezudo, escaped death, 18 people were injured in the blast.
Mendizábal and Arzalluz have been ordered to pay her 155,800 euros in compensation, and a further 286,200 euros to her bodyguard, Iñaki Torres.
ETA, classed as a terrorist group by the European Union, is blamed for 829 deaths during a four-decade campaign of shooting and bombing for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southern France, france24.com reports.
