Spokesman of Dagestan shot dead
As the morningstar.co.uk reports the unidentified gunmen on Thursday killed the spokesman of the leader of Russia's unrest-plagued Caucasus region of Dagestan.
According to reports the attackers fired on the car of Garun Kurbanov – the spokesman of Dagestan leader Magomedsalam Magomedov – just after 8 a.m. (0400 GMT), the Interfax news agency reported.
His driver was also killed, the morningstar.co.uk reports referring to the ITAR-TASS news agency.
Like the other regions of Russia's largely Muslim Northern Caucasus, Dagestan has been battling almost daily attacks by Islamist insurgents, which have claimed dozens of lives among security forces and civilians.
Russia's Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Interfax that Kurbanov's murder may be linked to his work.
"Investigators are analyzing different theories behind this crime. However, our main theory is that it was related to his work," Markin said, peopledaily.com.cn reported.
Investigation into the incident is underway.
