3 farmers killed in police firing in western India
At least three farmers were killed Tuesday when police opened fire to disperse protestors at the Mumbai-Pune highway in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, Xinhua said.
The farmers blocked the highway Tuesday morning to protest the diversion of agricultural water away from their land. The police had to open fire to disperse them in a bid to ensure the smooth flow of traffic there. Some three farmers were killed while those injured have been admitted to a local hospital.
The incident took place in Mawal Taluka in Pune town. A probe has been ordered into the incident.
