US company finds sunken treasure
The Odyssey Marine Exploration US Company, specializing in searching for and recovering sunken vessels has found the Gairsoppa British ship on the Atlantic Ocean bed, with 200 tons of silver aboard, the Voice of Russia reported.
The ship, which was also transporting a consignment of iron and tea from India to Liverpool, was torpedoed by a German submarine 560 kilometres off the Irish coast back in 1941.
Experts believe this is the biggest amount of the precious metal that’s ever been found at the bottom of the sea.
The cost of the find is estimated at 150 million euro. The recovery of the silver found is due to start in the second quarter of 2012.
