October 4 is World Animal Day
World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4. It started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists.
As the sources inform 4 October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment.
The international organizations protecting animals has declared that every year on this day, animal life in all its forms is to be celebrated, and special events are to be organized on locations all over the globe. In many western countries they think that the domestic animal is a member of the family as well and has equal rights.
In 2008 there were held events dedicated to the protection of the animals in 66 countries all over the world.
