Israel, Palestine to exchange soldier held captive for years
Israel's government approved early Wednesday an agreement with the Islamist Hamas movement to free an Israeli soldier held captive for years in the Gaza Strip, in exchange for Palestinians prisoners.
The deal will see Gilad Shalit, who was captured on June 25, 2006, freed, in return for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners.
The Israeli cabinet vote - 26 ministers in favour to three opposed - came at the end of a dramatic cabinet meeting which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called to discuss and ratify the deal, monstersandcritics.com reports.
