France calls on Turkey to recognize its real history
The Minister responsible for European Affairs, Jean Leonetti, called on Turkish government to recognize the Armenian Genocide as a reality taken place in the 20th century and rejected the views by Ankara that said that France is pushing forward the Armenian Genocide Bill as a part of pre-electoral campaign.
“All the nations today should be plain and bold and should look at their own histories. The ones that are responsible for the Armenian Genocide who have implemented it around 100 years ago are no more alive. The recognition is to confirm the historical fact, which should be done by Turkey,” Jean Leonetti told the “Classique” radio.
Bill introduced by MP Valerie Boyer (UMP) envisages a 45000 euro fine and a one-year imprisonment in case of denial of the Genocide. The bill is to be discussed in the lower chamber on December 22.
