Referendum to be held on Falkland Islands in 2013
The government of the Falkland Islands, the British territory in the South Atlantic claimed by Argentina, said it will hold a referendum in the first half of 2013 on the islands' status.
"I have no doubt that the people of the Falklands wish for the islands to remain a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom," Gavin Short, the chairman of the Falklands legislative committee, said in an e-mailed statement today.
"We certainly have no desire to be ruled by the government in Buenos Aires, a fact that is immediately obvious to anyone who has visited the islands and heard our views," he added.
