Two-day mourning announced in Iran
The authorities of the northwestern Iranian province of East Azarbaijan have announced two days of mourning starting on Monday after a deadly earthquake over the weekend.
The ISNA news agency reported Monday that according latest information indicated that 300 people were killed and some 5 000 injured in twin quakes that rocked the northwest of the country on Saturday.
An earthquake measuring 6.2 points on the Richter scale struck the city of Ahar in the East Azerbaijan province at 4:00 p.m. local time (11:30 GMT) on Saturday. Almost an hour later, another quake with magnitude 6 on the Richter scale hit Varzaqan at 5:04 p.m. local time (12:34 GMT) in the same province.
