National Unity Party, CDU, and SIM to support Serzh Sargsyan
National Unity Party led by Artashes Geghamian, the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) led by Khosrov Harutyunian, and the Union of Constitutional Rights (SIM) led by Hayk Babukhanian will support the candidacy of the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan in the upcoming presidential election.
According to Radio Liberty, the leaders of those three political forces who became parliamentary deputies in the spring of 2012 by the proportional list of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), did not take the indicated decision single-handedly.
Artashes Geghamian told Radio Liberty that he announced his intention to endorse Serzh Sargsyan as long ago as February of last year, during the presentation of his penultimate book, while at the presentation of his last book entitled “The Eurasian Union is the Path to the Future of Independent Armenia” he reaffirmed his intention.
The Council of Representatives of SIM Party took the decision to endorse the incumbent president in late 2012, taking into account “the wishes of party members and the dense army of party’s supporters,” in Babukhanian’s words.
CGU has not yet announced its viewpoint officially, but CDU Chairman Khosrov Harutyunian told Radio Liberty that “no doubt, the party will express its position”.
